A Day in the Bus
by Matthew
December 28, 2021

I spent yesterday at the bus with Brian.

The next step of the conversion is figuring out the electrical setup, which means deciding where to place the lighting, outlets, appliances, and speakers.

It also meant drilling lots of holes and fishing wire through the slim space between the ceiling and the roof.

We also came up with a plan for the kitchen, including figuring out where to put Robbi’s bright red microwave.

I had such fun dreaming and deciding and using power tools and only breaking one drill bit.

Brian is simply the best. It’s such a gift to be working with someone which brings such joy to the project. I think he’s even more excited than we are.

Step by step, our checkerboard canvas is inching ever closer to being a home.

The Busload of Books Tour is a year-long project to promote literacy and raise awareness of the challenges facing our nation’s public schools.

Author/illustrator duo Matthew Swanson and Robbi Behr (that’s us) and our four kids will spend the 2022-2023 school year traveling the country in a school bus/tiny home, visiting Title I schools in all 50 states (plus DC), and giving away 25,000 hardcover books to students and teachers from underserved communities.

As we travel, we will be blogging, vlogging and posting frequently to social media. All of our content will be appropriate for bringing families and students along on our ultimate road trip.
