Meet Sarah Garrison, who’s been teaching at Dewitt Elementary School for one year.

She’ll be our host when the Busload of Books rolls through Flat Lick, KY in March of 2023.

Sarah was kind enough to spend a few minutes answering some questions about her school.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I love interacting with my students. They always find a way to make me laugh and I enjoy seeing their perspectives on things that I never would have thought of.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL MAKES YOU PROUDEST?
We are a small but very close and very connected school. We take care of one another.

WHAT IS SOMETHING FUN OR QUIRKY ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL?
We LOVE to have fun. We find every excuse to do a fun activity, dress up or anything to make our students excited about coming to school.

WHAT’S THE GREATEST CHALLENGE FACING YOUR SCHOOL?
We live in a very rural and impoverished area and most of our students haven’t left the county, let alone got to experience what the world has to offer. We try to make our students very well-rounded and aware of what goes on in the world but with the limited resources that we have, this is very difficult. But our teachers and administrators do their absolute best with the funding that we have.

WHAT MIGHT THE BUSLOAD OF BOOKS TOUR BRING TO YOUR SCHOOL?
Our students come from very poor households and are very grateful for anything and everything they are given. They work very hard to get what they have, and the opportunity to meet Robbi and Matthew will mean the world to them. It will help them see that they have every chance to be whatever it is they want to be.

We’re so excited to meet Sarah (and the rest of the Dewitt Lions) and her students next spring.

Please join us in sending congratulations (and deepest gratitude) to Sarah as her teaching career begins.

The Busload of Books Tour is a year-long project to promote literacy and raise awareness of the challenges facing our nation’s public schools.

Author/illustrator duo Matthew Swanson and Robbi Behr (that’s us) and our four kids will spend the 2022-2023 school year traveling the country in a school bus/tiny home, visiting Title I schools in all 50 states (plus DC), and giving away 25,000 hardcover books to students and teachers from underserved communities.

As we travel, we will be blogging, vlogging and posting frequently to social media. All of our content will be appropriate for bringing families and students along on our ultimate road trip.

Here’s what’s next. A mere 2,134 miles remain between Squamish and Anchorage. In any other year, this would be the adventure and not an addendum.

We have pasta and firewood, a pound of salami and two cases of Coke. Our water and gas tanks are full.

Robbi did this drive as a kid, crammed in the back of a pickup with her sister and brother. Back then the roads weren’t paved and she spent the whole trip eating dust. Our drive will be luxurious in comparison.

So long for now—or not, depending on the whims of the rural Canadian Internet.

Anchorage or bust.
