Literacy nonprofit First Book provides books and other resources to 6.5 million kids from low-income communities across North America. First Book helps identify the schools we visit and coordinates with publishers to print, source, and ship the books we give away.
The Education Department at Washington College surveys students and teachers in the schools we visit—quantifying (for the first time at large scale) the impact of author/illustrator visits and providing data with the power to inform curriculum, shape legislation, and strengthen grant applications.
As part of a five-year initiative to distribute one million books to Title I communities, Build-A-Bear Foundation funds a free book and “reading buddy” teddy bear for every student and teacher in every school we visit.
